Monday English Club for Ages 6–9 — Starting 21 September in Wilanów

From Monday 21 September we're opening something new at our Wilanów studio: a Monday English Club for children aged 6–9, every Monday from 16:30 to 17:15.

It is an English class, not an art class — but it's built the way we build everything at Art for Kids: around doing and talking, not filling in worksheets.

What the club is

Forty-five minutes a week built around speaking. Children talk, play, tell stories and make small creative projects — so new words get used straight away, in a real sentence, instead of being copied into a notebook and forgotten by Wednesday.

Everything in the room happens in English: the greeting at the door, the game, the argument about who gets the gold paper, the goodbye. Children who don't yet have the words get them handed to them in the moment, when they actually need them — which is exactly when a word sticks.

What a session looks like

Every Monday follows the same shape, so children know where they are:

1. A warm-up round (5 min). Everyone says something — how the day went, what they ate, what they're annoyed about. Short, but everyone speaks in the first five minutes.
2. New words in context (10 min). A theme for the day, introduced with real objects, pictures and actions rather than a list on the board.
3. A game or role play (10 min). Guessing games, a shop, a restaurant, a detective hunt around the studio — the new words in use, at speed.
4. A small creative project (15 min). Something to make, and something to talk about while making it: pass me the scissors, mine is blue, I need more glue.
5. Show and tell (5 min). Each child says a sentence or two about what they made, and takes it home.

Why we made it speaking-first

Children of 6–9 in Warsaw usually have more English than they can use. They hear it at school, in games and on YouTube, and they understand a great deal — then someone asks a question and nothing comes out.

It's not a knowledge problem. It's a practice problem. In a class of twenty, one child might speak for a minute or two in a whole lesson. In a group of ten, with a teacher whose job is to keep everyone talking, every child speaks many times in the same 45 minutes.

We also keep the atmosphere deliberately relaxed about mistakes. Nobody gets corrected mid-sentence — the correct version comes back naturally in the reply, and the child keeps going. Children who stop being afraid of getting it wrong start speaking far more.

Why there's a creative project in an English class

Because making something gives children a reason to talk. When your hands are busy and you need the blue one, the glue, the big piece of card, the language stops being homework and becomes a way of getting what you want. Words attached to an action and an object are remembered much better than words attached to a page.

The projects are small — something that can be finished in a quarter of an hour and carried home the same day. The English comes first; the making is what keeps the English moving.

Who it's for

• Children who learn English at school but hardly ever speak it
• Children from international or bilingual families who need somewhere to keep their English active outside the house
• Children who find a textbook lesson hard to sit through, and do much better when they're allowed to move and make things

There's no level test and no entry exam. Mixed levels work well here — the activities are built so that a child with fewer words can join in with a word or a gesture, and a child with more can stretch.

Practical things worth knowing

• Bring nothing. All materials are included.
• 45 minutes fits neatly between the end of school and dinner.
• Ten places only, so the group stays small enough for everyone to speak.
• Our studio is at Branickiego 21A/U2 in Wilanów, a short walk from the local schools.

How to join — there are ten places

The group is capped at 10 children, and the first Monday is 21 September. We keep it that small on purpose: it's the only way every child gets to speak properly in 45 minutes. It also means that once the ten places are taken, the next opening comes up only when a child leaves the club.
