Underwater Castles for Ariel — A Creative 7th Birthday Party in Wilanów

This Saturday the studio filled up with seven-year-olds, a mountain of cardboard and a great deal of very colourful foam clay. The plan: build Ariel an underwater castle.

We run a lot of creative birthday parties for kids in Wilanów, and this one was a reminder of why the building projects work so well with this age group. Seven-year-olds are old enough to cut and construct properly, and still young enough to believe completely in the mermaid the castle is for.

First the castle has to stand up

Everyone started with the structure — walls, battlements, a doorway and a tower — cut from cardboard and slotted together. Nothing gets decorated until it stands on its own, and that rule teaches more than it sounds like: if the walls are not square, the tower leans, and the child who built it can see exactly why.

Then the foam clay took over

We had not expected it to take over quite so completely. Foam clay is light, it squashes between your fingers, it comes in colours that do not exist in nature, and — the part the children loved — it sticks to cardboard without any glue at all.

They pressed it into coral, seaweed, sea flowers and creeping vines climbing the castle walls. Pink, magenta, turquoise, lime green. Two colours kneaded together make a third, which was discovered within about four minutes and then applied to everything.

And finally the seabed

The base is what turns a castle into a scene. Blue water painted across the board, yellow sandbanks, a rim of brown rocks, tiny beads scattered about as treasure — and a small light tucked inside so the doorway glows from within.

What the children actually learned

• Build first, decorate second — the structure has to hold before anything goes on it
• How a new material behaves — how foam clay blends, sticks and dries
• Finishing a whole scene rather than a single object: castle, water, seabed and treasure together
• Working alongside each other — everyone made the same project, and no two came out remotely alike

Then cake, and a very satisfying amount of mess. 🎂
