Building Bridges: A Themed Workshop with a Grade 2 Class

Last week we packed up our supplies and headed straight to a Grade 2 classroom for a themed workshop all about bridges.

Why bridges?

The class had just started learning about structures and engineering, so together with their teacher we built a session around it: what bridges are for, how they're built, and the different shapes and types — arch, beam, suspension — that keep them standing. Then came the fun part: every child designed and built their own mini bridge model from cardboard, paper and tape, testing shapes, spans and supports to see what could hold weight and what couldn't.

The room turned into a mini engineering studio — rulers, scissors, glue sticks and offcuts everywhere, kids deep in concentration, comparing designs, and proudly testing whose bridge could "hold" the most toy cars.

Art for Kids, on location

This is one of our favourite parts of what we do: on-site workshops, where we bring the whole studio — materials, structure and all — straight to your school or preschool. We don't just turn up with a generic activity. Every visit is tailored to the class's current topic, age group and classroom space, whether that's bridges, the solar system, life cycles, or whatever the kids are curious about that week.

It's a great way to:

  • Bring a hands-on, creative dimension to whatever the class is already learning
  • Give kids a fun, memorable project without leaving the classroom
  • Take the planning and materials off teachers' hands completely

Bring a workshop to your school

If your class is exploring a topic that could use a creative, hands-on boost — bridges or anything else — we'd love to design a session around it. Get in touch and we'll put together a workshop tailored to your students.
